Its been a little over a week now since moving into the Studio at Percolator Gallery... and some very late nights have been spent there getting into the ambience of it. I wrote post here at the Visual Eclectica blog that gave the details about this move recently.
Here are some shots taken in the studio yesterday.
Three tables are arranged in a U-shape and shelving spans two adjacent walls...so Ive laid out journals, concertina books, and small works...and these Op-shop cups and saucers I found a while ago. Behind them is a DNA sketch from the recent residency.
...playing around with 3D possibilities with an essentially 2D work.
Small framed works from 2007
some of the recent journals and two new ones waiting to go.
Loving the fresh white walls to put up ideas to muse on.
Its all so delightfully fresh and organised at the moment... even flowers from
a lovely young artist who showed her work in the Gallery above last week.
A journal from 2007 ...enjoyed reading this quote the other day and also
working with the colours and composition on a new work last night.
The wonderful thing is that I have had the luxury of time to explore and look at old work and recent and research a bit more on the origin of motifs I like to work with that are based on seed forms or related ideas. This simple motif below is a recurring form in work this past ten or more years. From Ancient Greece I have actually handled cross-sections of seed capsules that correspond to this form.
Using acrylic paint, ink, and aquarelle pencils and crayons I did
a lot of work on quite large sheets of paper pushing around the ideas.
This is the kind of prep work and processing of ideas I love to do but have not had space to
really go for it for some time... so I made sure to make the most of these precious hours.
reworking the journal image form 2007
the seed pod templates I made to play around with ideas
for layering larger forms on busy under-painted works
Cutting up large works and making concertina pages
on which to work over was an engaging process
I spent last night trying to get down as many variations on a theme... being this motif which is in essence an infinity symbol as well as, perhaps, a seed capsule.
Its was such a freeing things to simply work very quickly on one image after another...
keeping the sense of animation that is a quality I love to have in most work i do.
Well... I wasn't intending to load all these images up ...but as I've
neglected this blog recently perhaps its just as well I have.

wonderful post Sophie, love all the images and the 3D pieces are just amazing, hope you are liking your new digs! xx
ReplyDeleteI think that I went so overboard with pics really gives away the enjoyment of this new space!
DeleteThanks my dear Cat... will be thinking more on the 3D possibilities!
xx
Great post! Thanks for so generously sharing your processes. Good luck with your new venture, the images of such a well-organised studio inspire me to to do a bit of cleaning up! nothing like a fresh start every now and then : )
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly W...
DeleteIts only took me a few days to start creating mess...and then I brought in another table...more surf sac area for expanding activity!
LAst night I went to the exhibition of first year architecture students where I'd tutored this semester... There was so much to see... strong development of ideas in a few short months. Starting to photograph the work I got distracted... came home without a record of all that intense thinking and making ...save what my mind could hold.
Somehow the criteria in architecture so suited my own aesthetic aims ... a scaffold to rethink and re-explore form... which is so important to me... the visualisation process they were encountering in terms of abstracting forms... aligns with visual processes of concerns to me...plus last night there was work also on show from Landscape architecture and Interior design faculties...so hundreds of student works... all with similar perameters of experimentation + development of ideas.
Last week's long marking session and excellent conversations with staff at times also added to my own engagement and learning. The focus and discussion of form and ideas was something I was hungry for...and this experience really fed that!
so interesting to follow your commitment to a shape, a form, a seed (or not). who knows what/why we are captivated by a shape, a color, and edge, but it's this exploration you've shown i've galloped through, enjoying so much. i'll breathe now, and go back and relook.
ReplyDeleteI hope on your (proposed) visit Velma we might have time to ponder such things...
Deletethe language of form feels central to me .. being drawn to artists and ideas that explore that extensively... big cultural ideas. It fits with why the seed rather than whole plant has such resonance. I noticed in England an abundance of sculptors working in 3D response to seeds. This semester's work got me thinking further on that!
Galloping... yes I included so many images in my late night burst of enthusiasm for posting on this neglected blog!
good cheer,
S
i'm counting down and a wee bit nervous. also excited to see your work and you in person...
DeleteIts a big trip for you my friend
Delete... presenting, worshipping, conferencing.... and feeling well prepared beforehand!
Keeping your energy up is the thing I see... anything that helps you take deep breaths, feel nourished and rested...that's all you need... the rest will simply flow.
Looking so forward to seeing how you enjoy you Aussie experience!
Wow! Sophie, what a great post love all the images, it's so interesting to see how you have worked with and revisited your motifs over the years. Lovely studio space, is it long term? Hope so! My studio is part of our shed, it is unlined, and cold at this time of year. Think I need to work on getting some walls up! During winter I will just have to live vicariously through you if you don't mind!
ReplyDeleteHey Sally...
Deletethe cold creeping in and taking over your studio is a true challenge...I hope you can successfully scale down for a period in order to keep going with something worthwhile where its warm!
I will not be taking this twelve month stint for granted thats for sure... mapping things around the fact its there!
Don't worry I was most surprised, even annoyed, when the pod form first started haunting me... I was forced into engagement as if against my will by the fact it would not go away!
Feels like an explosion of good work... that was waiting to be born. Love that infinity/seed pod form, too. Its an important spiritual symbol for me representing a reciprocal relationship with the earth - an energy loop that flows in and out of me and nourishes me as it nousrishes the land and spirits. Like breathing with trees.... Enjoy your time in this great studio!!!
ReplyDeleteWaiting to be born... lovely...and so true Valerianna!
DeleteIsn't that so the case at times for each of us...shifts that are brewing and need to be expressed eventually!
Yes to the power of this symbol...those most delicate lines of the repeated form were a breathing in and out thing... completely compelling to make those lightly patterned pages.
Of course you bring that rich forest imagery to me... thank you!
yep, the studio space looks really brilliant, very calm and spacious.
ReplyDeletefor me those white walls are perfect for highlighting your work which is so graphic .how wonderful to have the space , physical and mental , to stand back and see the big picture of the travels that all work has been on and plot the way forward ...
GO YOU !
I like this new comment/reply system that turned up here out of the blue Roz... feels as though I am drinking tea and chatting as I reply this morning!
DeleteYou are so spot on... calm, spacious, timely...physical and mental space! Yes, yes and yes!
Seeing the travels indeed and plotting... do come for tea one day... and good working to you too!
So enjoyed waking up this morning to your lovely comments...
ReplyDeletestayed up way too late writing blog post last night but it felt like I was expressing gratitude for the good things of latte that have been so enriching... and so needed speaking to.
Cherish your comments all!
S xo
Sophie, I love how you are inspired and driven by this theme. Looks like the new space will feed the creative energy even more. Whenever I see piles of sketchbooks I long to reach out and ask for a peek inside but you offer that with every post so we are very lucky. Those templates are a great thing for working up ideas too. It's all so fascinating! Thanks for the insight.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lesley,
DeleteAnother late night there and yes... much painting happening in this first week or so. On paper ... working through ideas... not canvases for finished works. Trying to add in some new elements with thematic material. Shifted into colours I've not used in a while last night so its all been interesting and a most useful exercise... using up lots of ignored paper and paint materials that have been around for ages.
ALways interesting to understand a little of each person's process behind their work...I love getting that opportunity too!
After leaving this comment yesterday Sophie I was thinking about the book you'd discussed and remembered I had an old book, bought long ago in a second hand shop that was all about seeds and seed heads.I had forgotten all about it. There are some great black and white images in it and I searched it out from the shelves yesterday. You may already know it, but if not, have a look for 'Nature as Designer' by Bertil Bager. Just thought it might be of interest to you!
DeleteOk.. thanks for thinking of me... will look it up now Lesley!
Deletecheers,
S
Thanks for the tea break Sophie and the tour of your new studio!
ReplyDeletePleasure Carole...more colour as of last night!
ReplyDeleteThis new space looks wonderful - so clean and so tidy. Fresh flowers and matching coffee cups!! Sophie your posts always make me feel like getting on a plane to Brisbane and coming to meet you.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmm its got me thinking that I really need to have a clean out. Spring clean - that sounds like a plan.
Meagan...
DeleteIts very clean and white this week... will it stay like that? Good question.
Do let me know if you come north at some stage! For once my studio doesn't need a spring clean...
cheers,
S
So exciting. I am so glad you have some space to spread your wings....so to speak!!! Loved the cutouts. What a wonderful "tool" and excellent object unto itself. Enjoy the space lady. In the Northern Hemisphere/ Iowa we are using the incoming HOT and HUMID weather to get inside and to work. Happy Painting!!!

Hi Mary,
Deletejust found your comment! Space... yes don't we love it when its ours to revel in! When not we keep on and find a way to work...but I must say this is lovely!
Enjoy the retreat to the cool cave over there! best to you!
xo
Hi Sophie
ReplyDeletelike everyone I'm grateful that you have been so generous with images of your studio and work. I particularly like your concertina books, which is encouraging me to make some more of my own and also use the ones I bought in Japan!
Leonie
PS what is that funky font you are using?
Hi Leonie,
Deletefound your note the other day! Have lost track in the last two months of too many things!
Concertina books are addictive... I've noticed how popular they are with many others this year.
The font I found on the extended blogger template platform. Scroll through all the fonts on offer and try anything you think looks like this... have completely forgotten the name. Funny...with three blogs...this one is the template, fonts and such that I find most easy on the eye...took me ages to get this blog working for me.. never used to have comments switched on till late last year!
best,
S
Looks like such a fabulous space! What fun!
ReplyDeleteTHanks Shell...
Deletejust found your comment... hope your festival weekend went really well.
The new place looks so enticing! Love all your sketches; is the second one a book? I hope you're enjoying it, and I can't wait to see what you will make here...
ReplyDeleteHi Sharmon...
DeleteJust found your comment... thank you for visiting here. The second one is a concertina book. Been great to have the space and making time to be there whenever I can. Long hours and who knows what will evolve!
best to you!
